Sohbandang Chutney (Tree Tomato Chutney)

Cooking from Meghalaya.

We bought the tomatoes on our way to Cherrapunjee and took the recipe from the young girl who was sold them to us. In Khasi these tomatoes are called ‘sohba’. They grow on trees therefore they are known as “tree tomatoes”.

  1. You can boil, bake or roast the tomatoes to cook them. Roasting them will give them a smoky flavour, whereas, baking them will give them a sweet caramelised flavour. If you want to maintain a natural nutrient and keep the flavours mild you may enjoy boiling them.
  2. After your tomatoes are cooked remove the skin and crush the tomatoes. Finely chop the onions, coriander leaves and crush the chilies. Add all the ingredients along with mustard oil and salt to taste.
  3. Serve it with steamed rice or fried potatoes.
